Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a group of disorders which increases your risk of having a heart attack , stroke and diabetes. The risk factors are increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, having waist line more than 40 inches, and abnormal cholesterol levels . Having any of these not mean that you have the condition. presence of at least three means that you have metabolic syndrome. But surely presence of any these puts you at a higher risk. and the risk increases with increasing risk factors.

Sedentary Life

Having a lazy life and eating unhealthy foods like fast foods will lead to several conditions that include in a metabolic syndrome.

  • Lifestyle

    Habits like smoking , drinking alcohol , etc also is a risk factor.

  • Insulin resistance

    There is a condition where the cells of body is not able to take up the glucose present in blood instead of presence of a hormone which helps to do so(Insulin). this is known as insulin resistance. This also is a part of metabolic syndrome as it keeps the blood glucose levels high.

  • Increasing age

    Advancing age also causes increased occurrence.

Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

Mostly this condition does not show any symptom. Obesity presents as excess fat in body. Like big waistline, loose fat around chest, neck, etc. You may have increased thirst and appetite. You will have to pass urine many times in a day.

Diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome

The doctor might ask for certain blood tests. Presence of any of the three that is explained below may tell you that you have metabolic syndrome.

Waist line

A waistline that of more than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men means that you are obese.

Cholestrol

Amount of cholesterol exceeding 150mg/dL. amount of good fat less than 50mg/dL in women and less than 45mg/dl in men.

Blood Sugar Level

A blood sugar level of 100 mg/dL is considered normal. Exceeding which you may have to undergo some more test to confirm consistent rise in blood sugar. If it happens then you are diagnosed as a diabetic , which again contributes to metabolic syndrome.

Hypertension

A blood pressure of 120/80 mmHg to 140/90 mmHg is considerable normal. Above that can contribute to metabolic syndrome.
